Laneway Festival Announces Sideshows
20 November 2009
Sometimes once is not enough. Nothing beats the experience of watching your favourite band in a festival setting but some bands so are so great that they need their own stage, their own night. The Laneway Festival is pleased to announce a series of very special sideshows for your aural pleasure.
FLORENCE & THE MACHINE
'Florence and the Machine's mad art-pop will be 2009's most beautiful noise' - The Guardian
Londoners FLORENCE & THE MACHINE have had a massive 2009 off the back of their fierce, thrilling, Mercury Prize-nominated debut Lungs. And what lungs the 22-year old frontwoman must possess. Capable of raising roofs with her voice and raising temperatures with her fiery, impassioned performances, Florence is a talent of the kind that emerges only every so often.
Replete with soaring melodies and hummable hooks, Lungs features radio favourites 'Kiss With a Fist', 'The Drumming Song' and 'Rabbit Hole (Raise It Up)'. Catch Florence and her well-oiled Machine perform these and more when they play in Australia for the very first time.

HOCKEY
Dance punk/indie rockers HOCKEY will make their way to Australia from Portland, Oregan for the first time to perform at the Laneway Festivals and headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne.
Compared in sound to bands such as The Strokes and LCD Soundsystem, HOCKEY spent 2009 performing at international festivals Glastonbury, Reading & Leads, T In The Park, Bonnaroo and Hove as well as touring with Passion Pit and Friendly Fires.
Praise for the four piece has come from all quarters. With second single "Song Away" acting as a holistic mission statement wrapped in a nod and a wink, "These scruffy bike-riding vegans could
easily be enjoyed by fans of Dylan, Springsteen and the Hold Steady as much as they could by devotees of LCD Soundsystem" says U.K.'s Guardian newspaper. "See them now while they are still playing small rooms," advises Time Out New York.
Hockey's debut album 'Mind Chaos' is out now, featuring 'Too Fake' & 'Song Away'"

WILD BEASTS
"Wild is right! Vocalist Hayden Thorpe combines a wild-eyed Antony yelp with a low and brooding Morrissey croon, slamming his singular voice against songs that pulse and jangle - restless music for restless times." Rolling Stone US
The UK's WILD BEASTS are an otherwordly delight. The indie-rock Domino signing have critics falling over themselves in praise of their boundary-pushing sound on their second album, Two Dancers. A record of tightrope-high drama, it finds the Wild Beasts on fire. Two Dancers is alive with its sense of possibility, a sound that shimmers and sways in the band's own mercurial fashion.
Lead singer Hayden Thorpe's enormous falsetto voice, which soars over chiming guitars, is truly unique and live, the four-piece is as affecting as it is audacious. As audacious as say, Arcade Fire crossed with Antony & The Johnstons. Don't miss this rare pleasure as Wild Beasts play the Laneway Festival and sideshows in Sydney and Melbourne this summer.
